In life, we come into contact with various types of clothing made of different fabrics. If not washed properly, it will not only cause the clothes to lose their shape but also lead to color fading of the fabrics and other varying degrees of damage, making the clothes unsuitable for reuse. Therefore, based on the different materials of the clothes, I have summarized a series of washing methods.
Washing of woolen garments: Woolen fabrics are coarse-spun woolen materials with a relatively coarse structure that is prone to accumulating dirt. They require regular cleaning. However, frequent washing often leads to loss of elasticity and deformation, affecting the wearing effect. Therefore, they should be dry-cleaned. During dry cleaning, first expose the clothes to direct sunlight to remove dust, then lay the clothes flat on a table covered with a sheet or blanket, place a wrung-out hot towel on top, and use an iron to iron it. The dust will be absorbed along with the evaporation of the water vapor onto the towel. If the towel becomes dirty while the clothes are still not clean, wash the towel with hot water and then lay it again for repeated ironing. The dust on the clothes can then be absorbed by the towel. If there are thick stains on the collars and sleeves, you can wipe them with gasoline, wait for the oil stains to dissolve, and then iron them with a hot towel. This way, the clothes will be clean and neat. This method is suitable for household cleaning.
Cleaning of silk garments: Silk is made from silk cocoons. Because silk is resistant to acid but not to alkali, during washing, the detergent should be kept neutral or slightly acidic. If using soap flakes or transparent soap, it should be diluted into a warm solution before use. Never use soap for washing as the precipitates of fatty acid magnesium and lipidic acid calcium produced by the soap solution in water are very sticky. These precipitates have a strong adhesive property and, once they adhere to the silk garments, it is very difficult to wash them clean. In addition, during washing, it is necessary to soak the garments in warm water and then rinse them with cold water. The soaking time should not be too long. To maintain the bright color of silk garments, 2 to 3 drops of vinegar can be added during the final rinse with clean water. Let the garments soak for 5 minutes, then take them out and lay them flat to dry. Do not wring or twist them. When they are about 70% dry, remove them, lay them flat, use your hands to press and twist them in the direction of the weave, straighten them, fold them neatly, and hang them on the hanger to dry.
Cleaning of down clothing: When the down clothing is not very dirty, you can use a clean towel to dip in gasoline and gently wipe the sleeves, collar, front part, etc. to remove the oil stains. Then, use a dry towel to re-wipe the areas where gasoline has been applied. Once the gasoline has evaporated completely, you can wear it. For more dirty down coats, they need to be washed in water. Choose neutral laundry detergent (washing powder) to avoid the filling materials being eroded by excessive acid or alkali. Before washing, soak them in cold water for about 20 minutes. Then, squeeze out the water from the clothes, and put them in a low-temperature laundry detergent at around 35 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes. Take out the clothes, lay them flat on a clean table, and use a soft-bristled brush dipped in the laundry detergent to scrub. Do not rub vigorously. First, scrub the inside, then the surface, and finally the front and back of both sleeves. For the dirtier areas, sprinkle some dry laundry detergent and scrub a few times. After scrubbing, toss the clothes up and down a few times in the original washing liquid, then rinse twice with warm water and three times with clean water. After the down coat is washed, do not wring or expose to direct sunlight or heat. It should be placed in a cool and ventilated place to dry. After it is completely dry, gently pat it with your hands or a small wooden stick to restore the natural fluffy state of the down.
